Capacitor And Ultracapacitor Transient Support
Canonical Definition
Capacitor transient support is the controlled use of electrostatic energy storage to source or absorb current over a defined voltage and time window, with performance limited by capacitance, ESR, inductance, cell voltage, balancing, wiring, temperature, protection, and the system that must recharge it.
Usable Energy
Eusable = ½ × C × (Vstart² - Vminimum²)Do not count all energy down to zero volts when the amplifier stops operating at a much higher bus voltage. The usable window may be only a fraction of the bank's total stored energy.
Voltage Change Under Current
ΔVideal = I × time / C
Vinstantaneous_drop ≈ I × ESRThe ideal capacitance term and immediate ESR drop are separate. Wiring resistance, fuse and contactor resistance, and inductance further limit how much support reaches the amplifier.
Time-Scale Fit
| Problem | Likely primary tool |
|---|---|
| microsecond-to-millisecond local transient | local capacitance, low-inductance layout, amplifier supply design |
| short bass burst | capacitor or battery power plus low-resistance wiring |
| seconds of heavy output | battery energy and power capability |
| sustained average deficit | alternator and charging-system capability |
Series Ultracapacitor Cells
Series capacitance decreases while voltage capability increases. Cell leakage and tolerance cause unequal voltage division, so monitor and balance every cell according to the bank design. Never allow one cell to exceed its rated voltage even when total bank voltage appears acceptable.
Precharge And Service
- isolate the main path
- connect a controlled precharge path
- verify the downstream voltage rises as expected
- close the main contactor only after the voltage difference is safe
- open the main path before service
- use a designed discharge path and measure bank voltage directly before touching conductors
Protection
Fuse the conductors and source paths with devices rated for the bank voltage and available fault current. The bank can source a severe short even after the vehicle battery is disconnected. Enclose exposed busbars and provide a service disconnect.
Verification
- starting and minimum bus voltage
- bank and amplifier current
- event duration and recharge time
- ESR and path resistance
- cell voltage balance
- precharge current and contactor sequence
- component temperature after repeated events
- measured amplifier-terminal benefit, not only bank-terminal voltage
