Battery Power, Energy, And Current Sharing
Canonical Definition
Battery capability is the chemistry- and condition-dependent ability of a battery or bank to store charge and energy, source or absorb current, maintain voltage, and remain within thermal, current, state-of-charge, and protection limits over a stated time interval.
Charge, Energy, And Power
| Quantity | Meaning | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Ah | electric charge over time | maximum current, voltage stability, or usable energy by itself |
| Wh | energy over a stated voltage range | instantaneous power capability |
| W or kW | rate of energy transfer | runtime without an energy value |
| internal resistance | part of voltage sag and heat under current | total capacity or BMS limits |
The Battery Can Power Audio With The Engine Running
The alternator, battery, and loads share one bus. When available generation and regulation hold the bus above the battery's effective voltage, the battery charges. When demand exceeds generation or the battery becomes the stronger source, current flows out of it. This can last milliseconds or minutes depending on the deficit.
Runtime Estimate
usable energy ≈ integrated battery voltage × usable amp-hours
runtime ≈ usable watt-hours × system efficiency / average load wattsUse the real stop condition, temperature, state of charge, load, chemistry, aging, BMS limit, and converter efficiency. Nominal voltage multiplied by rated amp-hours is only a starting estimate.
Parallel Current Sharing
Current divides according to each branch's battery impedance, cable resistance, lugs, fuse, state of charge, temperature, and BMS state. Use busbars or another equal-path layout, match branch conductors, fuse each source branch, and measure branch current when equal sharing matters.
Mixing Batteries
Nominal voltage alone does not establish compatibility. Chemistry, resting voltage, charge profile, age, capacity, internal resistance, temperature, and protection behavior can create uncontrolled equalization current or chronic imbalance. Follow the exact battery and charging-system documentation.
