Analog Audio Interface Measurement And Verification
First Choose A Safe Reference
Before attaching a probe, identify whether the output is single-ended, differential, balanced, BTL, floating, transformer-isolated, speaker-level, or unknown. Confirm instrument ground, isolation, common-mode, voltage, bandwidth and probe ratings. An earth-referenced oscilloscope ground clip can short one leg of a floating or bridged output.

|---|---|
| source unloaded | what can the source produce without the installed load? |
| source loaded | what reaches the receiver through the final cable and load? |
| each conductor to reference | what are the common-mode and leg voltages? |
| differential | what signal does the differential receiver respond to? |
| receiver output | what level, noise, distortion and clipping result after the interface? |
| reference and shield | what unwanted voltage or current exists in return and shield paths? |
Core Test Sequence
- Record source, receiver, cable, connector, shield, power and vehicle revisions.
- Confirm pinout and probe safety at protected low level.
- Measure source level and clipping unloaded and under the actual load.
- Measure differential voltage and each leg to the selected reference.
- Verify input and output headroom plus common-mode range.
- Sweep magnitude, phase, noise and distortion through the final path.
- Measure CMRR with stated common-mode level, frequency and source imbalance.
- Verify galvanic isolation with every USB, power, chassis and accessory connection attached.
- Capture startup, shutdown, mute, source change, connect, disconnect, sleep, wake and fault events.
- Repeat in final trim and vehicle operating states.
CMRR Test
Apply substantially the same signal to both receiver inputs while controlling residual differential signal. Measure the output and compare common-mode gain to differential gain. Record source impedance on both legs, cable capacitance, receiver gain, common-mode amplitude, frequency, bandwidth, temperature and load.
Noise-State Matrix
Do not report one idle noise number as the entire vehicle result. Include relevant combinations of:
- engine off, crank, idle, cruise-equivalent charging and stop-start
- alternator, DC-DC converter, charger and battery states
- lighting, blower, windows, seats, pumps, wipers and motors
- USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, displays, processors and data networks
- source, DSP, amplifier mute, standby, active, sleep and wake
Evidence Requirements
Preserve raw data, instrument and probe identification, calibration, bandwidth, weighting, reference, gain, load, cable, vehicle state, software, processing, result, limit and disposition. A screenshot without these conditions cannot support commissioning or regression.
Failure Examples
- clean unloaded source that clips into the receiver
- small differential signal with excessive common-mode voltage
- good one-kilohertz CMRR but poor high-frequency rejection
- transformer isolation defeated by a USB ground
- quiet steady state with a large turn-on transient
- noise that appears only when a vehicle module wakes
