Measurement Records And Traceability
A calibrated microphone is one link. The source, signal, interface, gains, software, settings, geometry, environment, vehicle state, processing, uncertainty, and system release also determine what the result means.
The Complete Record
| Category | Required information |
|---|---|
| Question | measurand, purpose, requirement identifier, pass/fail limit, method |
| System | release identifier, source, preset, controls, route, output, load, vehicle state |
| Chain | signal file, generator, interface, probe or microphone, preamp, converter, software, cables |
| Calibration | correction file, sensitivity, calibrator, pre-check, post-check, gain range, overload status |
| Geometry | microphone or probe coordinates, orientation, seat, headrest, trim, doors, windows, fixtures |
| Processing | reference, gate, window, FFT, smoothing, averaging, weighting, detector, bandwidth, normalization |
| Evidence | raw data, processed view, result, limitation, operator, date, disposition, related files |
Raw Data And Views
raw capture
→ preserved source record
→ documented processing choices
→ one or more views for the question
→ acceptance result and limitation statement
Do not replace the raw record with a screenshot. Smoothing, gating, averages, normalization, axis limits, and annotations can create useful views, but those views must remain linked to the unchanged source data.
Calibration Is Not The Whole Chain
NIST defines metrological traceability as a property of a measurement result related to a reference through a documented unbroken chain of calibrations, each contributing uncertainty. A microphone calibration file does not automatically cover the interface gain, source reference, software method, geometry, vehicle condition, or later processing.
Comparison Test
Before comparing two records, ask whether the conditions that matter to the question match:
- same source file or known equivalent
- same source, preset, gain, and user-control state
- same instrument path and calibration
- same microphone or probe position
- same vehicle openings, trim, seats, cargo, and electrical state
- same level, thermal state, window, gate, smoothing, and averaging
When they do not match, document the difference and do not claim that the delta came from the system change alone.
Invalid Evidence
- clipped, overloaded, under-range, unlocked, or corrupted data
- unknown correction file or sensitivity
- missing source and system state
- missing position, orientation, gate, smoothing, weighting, or detector
- processed screenshot without raw data
- result that cannot be tied to a requirement and release
