Bluetooth LE Audio And LC3
Canonical Definition
Bluetooth LE Audio is the Bluetooth Low Energy audio architecture defined by a coordinated set of profiles, services, transport specifications, and the LC3 codec. Compatible radio hardware alone does not establish an active LE Audio path.
Classic Audio Versus LE Audio
| System | Radio and transport family | Common media architecture |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth Classic Audio | BR/EDR | A2DP and compatible media codecs |
| Bluetooth LE Audio | Bluetooth Low Energy isochronous transport | LE Audio profiles and services using LC3 |
A device may support both systems. The active path depends on source, sink, host software, profiles, services, roles, and use-case configuration.
LC3
LC3 is the mandatory codec foundation of LE Audio. It supports music and speech applications and allows implementations to trade bitrate, quality, robustness, and power for a defined use case. A lower bitrate alone does not prove lower quality, and LC3 does not remove downstream resampling, mixing, buffering, DAC, or analog-output limits.
Use Cases
- Unicast: private source-to-sink audio session.
- Multi-stream: multiple coordinated streams, such as synchronized left and right sinks.
- Broadcast: one transmitter makes an audio broadcast available to compatible receivers, including Auracast use cases.
Broadcast audio is not ordinary paired private playback. Discovery, access, privacy, channel selection, and retained vehicle functions require separate design.
Support Contract
- Controller and radio capability
- Operating-system and host-stack support
- Required source and sink roles
- Profiles, services, codec, and configuration
- Vehicle-host routing, volume, calls, prompts, and fallback behavior
A Bluetooth version number proves none of those layers by itself.
Verification
- Record the complete support contract and active mode.
- Measure level, response, latency, dropouts, and channel synchronization.
- Test unicast, multi-stream, and broadcast separately when supported.
- Record fallback to Bluetooth Classic and restored volume state.
- Verify calls, prompts, safety audio, reconnect, and sleep behavior.
