Passive Crossover Component Parasitics And Tolerances
Canonical Definition
Passive crossover components are non-ideal parts whose resistance, inductance, capacitance, loss, current and voltage limits, temperature coefficient, tolerance, coupling, and physical construction affect both transfer and reliability.
Inductors
| Property | Network effect |
|---|---|
| DCR | level loss, heat, damping change, and filter-Q shift |
| Core material | current-dependent inductance, hysteresis, and possible nonlinearity |
| Irms | current associated with a stated temperature-rise method |
| Isat | current associated with a stated inductance reduction |
| Orientation and spacing | mutual coupling between nearby coils |
Air-core construction avoids magnetic-core saturation but still has DCR, heat, stray field, physical size, and coupling. Cored inductors can reduce DCR and size but must be checked at real current.
Capacitors
- capacitance and tolerance
- ESR and dissipation versus frequency
- voltage and RMS-current capability
- dielectric, temperature, aging, and construction
- lead and mounting inductance
Do not choose from dielectric labels alone. Use the part data and measure the assembled transfer under the expected AC voltage, temperature, and frequency range.
Resistors
Record resistance, tolerance, temperature coefficient, inductance, average power, pulse energy, mounting method, ambient, surface temperature, and required clearance. A resistor's advertised power commonly assumes a specific case temperature, airflow, board, or heatsink.
Layout Is Part Of The Circuit
- Separate inductors and orient their axes to reduce coupling.
- Keep hot resistors away from capacitors, plastic, foam, wire insulation, and adhesives.
- Secure heavy components for vehicle vibration and crash load.
- Keep high-current paths short, wide, and mechanically supported.
- Provide strain relief, service labels, and access for measurement and replacement.
Tolerance Analysis
Do not test only the nominal simulation. Sweep component tolerance, DCR, ESR, driver variation, temperature, and production sample differences. Identify which parts move crossover frequency, level, impedance minimum, reverse-polarity behavior, or thermal margin the most.
