Panel Resonance, Squeak, Rattle, And Buzz Control
Canonical Definition
Panel and trim noise control is the diagnosis and treatment of structural resonance, radiated panel sound, intermittent contact, loose-part impact, frictional squeak, air-leak noise, wire slap, and component rub or buzz by reproducing and localizing the exact mechanism.
Classify Before Repairing
| Symptom class | Likely evidence | Possible repair family |
|---|---|---|
| resonance | narrow frequency, ring-down, broad panel motion | damping, bracing, joint repair |
| rattle or impact | clearance closes, loose clip or object moves | fastener, clip, routing, clearance |
| squeak | friction with motion, temperature or load | surface repair, decoupling, preload |
| air leak | flow noise or pressure-dependent whistle | seal, geometry, boundary repair |
| speaker rub or buzz | follows driver motion or damage | mounting, clearance, driver service |
Safe Reproduction
Use the lowest level that reproduces the symptom. Record frequency or program, channel, level, temperature, door and window state, road or stationary state, and exact location. A stepped sweep is often safer and more diagnostic than a continuous high-level tone.
One Boundary At A Time
Pressing a large trim panel may change many contacts at once. Use one temporary restraint, shim, disconnected item, known-good clip, or isolated wire at a time. Predict both outcomes before the test.
Verification
Repeat the original condition plus nearby frequencies and levels. Then retest after trim reassembly, heat, road vibration and door operation. A temporary foam or tape mask is not a complete repair when the real fault is a broken clip, cracked bracket or loose fastener.
