Amplifier Burst, Thermal, And Compression Testing
Definition: output, loss, temperature, compression, limiting, protection and recovery measured as functions of signal, duty cycle, load, supply, cooling and starting thermal state.
Test Families
| Test | Primary question |
|---|---|
| single burst | short-term output before major heating or supply depletion |
| repeated burst | energy storage, recovery, accumulated heating and compression |
| continuous tone | sustained electrical and thermal capability under a severe narrowband load |
| multitone or noise | wideband loading and intermodulation under a declared spectrum |
| music or program | behavior with documented crest factor and time history |
| fault and protection | safe response and recovery, not a rated operating target |
Duty Cycle Is Part Of The Result
Record waveform, frequency or spectrum, peak, RMS, crest factor, ramp, on-time, off-time, repetition count, channel loading and total session time. A clean short burst does not prove the same output can be sustained.
Measure Compression Before Shutdown
Track output voltage and current, distortion, supply sag, input current, efficiency, temperatures, fan state and load-bank resistance over the sequence. Output may stop increasing or may fall before visible clipping or formal protection occurs.
Thermal State
- Record ambient and starting temperatures.
- Measure representative hotspots, not only the outer heatsink.
- Include load bank, cables, lugs, fuses, busbars and supply.
- Continue logging after output stops to capture delayed temperature rise.
- State cooling orientation, airflow and fan-control behavior.
Recovery
Do not use one universal five-minute pause. Approve the next run only after the declared voltage, temperature, load resistance, compression, protection and supply-recovery conditions are met.
First Limiting Mechanism
The amplifier result ends when the first relevant boundary is reached: source or analyzer clipping, supply sag, cable or fuse heating, amplifier voltage or current limit, thermal compression, protection, load-bank temperature, or another declared limit. Report that mechanism explicitly.
